Default Member of the Month: Noobst3R & Mr. Pedantic

It took two rounds of voting, but eventually, a winner was found... or two. That's right, this month's MotM competition was so fierce, that the admins eventually gave up and declared both Noobst3R AND Mr. Pedantic the winners of this months contest. Questions

1/ Wow, two winners this month, you two must be something special indeed. Why don’t you tell us about yourselves?

Mr.Pedantic: I'm a student in the University of Auckland, I've nearly finished my first year of Biomedical Sciences, which is a prereq for getting into the Medicine programme, so I've filled out my application and everything, just waiting on exam results and an interview invitation. I play the accordion, on a semi-professional level. Erm...other than that, I think I'm fairly normal. I play sport, I go out, spend time with my mates, and all that. My life is on hold for the moment, I'm actually in the middle of exams, so my entire life consists basically of studying and what I can fit in during the breaks.

Noobst3R: Well, i first started gaming when i was 6, and i mostly played Carmageddon II, together with my uncle (he was around 22 back), i always loved it to go there and game with him. Actually i still enjoy it. I have some memories of Unreal, but that's a bit unclear. Ah, i also remember playing the demo of Shogo. Some Mech game. I can't remember if he bought the full version later or not, but we enjoyed the demo. It was pretty hard though. Later on, i played Return to Castle Wolfenstein, he was studying on his bed, and i was killing Nazi's on the pc. Good times. Later i started playing Tactical Ops, a UT99 mod that went retail. I still play it sometimes, i mostly own all the 30 year old that played the game since it came out in 2001.

2/ And what drove you to choose the forum names you currently use?

Mr.Pedantic: Everyone who knows me thinks I'm really pedantic; I guess I am, but that's because I think the little things are important. So my friends started calling me Mr. Pedantic whenever I pointed out something they didn't think was worth mentioning or correcting, and the name's stuck. I'm really bad with coming up with names, so before then I had some pretty weird ones, but I think Mr. Pedantic is one I'm going to keep for a while.

Noobst3R: Mainly because it indicates my gaming skills (Back then it was), and the -ster behind it.. it was just an impulse, and it made it a bit more original. I've went by many names, although I'm not very old. My uncle's nickname was Marquis, so i, as a 8year old, stole his name, but i just used a different writing, but it was pronounced the same. Marqy. Later i used Terminator, but then i realized the "Gaming Hyperactive Kiddo" factor was too high, i went for noobst3R as a general name.

3/ What brought you to the Strategy Informer forums, and what makes you stick around?

Mr.Pedantic: A lot of us emigrated here in April, when Filefront went down (even though Management keep denying it was an April Fools Joke... ). I guess most of the people who came have gone now, but a few of us have stayed. Personally, I stayed because of the Tech section; I like having different perspectives on the same information, so frequenting different forums is quite nice. Plus, you guys are a fairly decent lot.

Noobst3R: Well, that's a very long story pal, but i was a Filefront , and when it went down, the forum moved to here, unfortunately, or fortunately, it's how you see it, Filefront was bought by it's original founders, and so it came back. I decided to stay here and live in this just born community of 10 members, and a bit later, all C-O peeps rushed in. So it's a happy place now.

4/ What gaming feat are you most proud of?

Mr.Pedantic: I don't really have any, to be honest. When I game I don't set out to do anything in particular. I muck around, kill people, explore, do random shit, that sort of thing. I don't play with a goal or any purpose in mind, so I don't generally tend to do much in the way of feats worthy of pride or recognition.

Noobst3R: I don't know how to interpret this question, but let's say, the knives on the spoiler of the Eagle car in Carmageddon II.

5/ What is the worst game you have ever played?

Mr.Pedantic: That would have to be Arcanum. I'm really good with RPGs and reading a few reviews, I noticed a lot of people said that it was really expansive and non-linear, so I gave it a go. To be honest, I never got up to any of that, the combat system was so strange I just couldn't get a grip on it. I never sold it though, it's still somewhere in my drawer.

Noobst3R: Windows Pinball

6/ Everyone has that one game that they just keep going back to, no matter how old. What’s yours and why?

Mr.Pedantic: Baldur's Gate 2. It's just an awesome RPG. The things that you could do in Baldur's Gate 2 (keeping in mind it's nearly a decade old) in terms of its size, where you could go, what you could do, things you could make, it's amazing. Absolutely amazing. Dialogue is brilliant, all very well written, and the music is sublime. The only game that comes close is Oblivion.

Noobst3R: Tactical Ops and Wolfenstein. See the long story above, my fingers will leave blood stains on my keyboard if i keep typing.

7/ You’re so close to getting 100% on game you’ve been playing endlessly for the past few weeks, and then the girl of your dreams walks through the door. What do you do?

Mr.Pedantic: Drop the game.

Noobst3R: Have seat under my desk, let me get that achievement.

Well played sir well played.

I like the stories, a good read. I'm liking up to Mr. Pedantic, I see why I voted for him hes very "me".

And at the same time, I like noobster's UT reference and TacOps, I likely would have played against you all the way back then Nooby! When there was only a handful of servers. Was good times, didn't stay long because C&C Ren came out and i migrated and just loved it (cus of my own youth) but i can empathise, tac ops and ut, were awesome, Carmageddon I never have played And wolfenstein I heard was good, especially if you liked roast.

Part 2
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

8/ What are your thoughts on: Dedicated Servers?

Mr.Pedantic: I don't play online much. When I did game a lot we had crappy internet, and now when we have good internet I don't have any good multiplayer games (apart from WoW) so I have no idea.

Noobst3R: It's a must for every PC game that has a multiplayer. Going for a Matchmaking system on a pc game is bullshit. The only things that keep a game living, is a modding and multiplayer community. There is no place to go.. only players to connect with. There is no reason to go matchmaking. If you use a CD-key, nobody with an illegal Copy will go online. IW said this "There is no need to install mods!" ( this has been really said by Robert Bowling) Well, look at that? Isn't that nice? I don't need to enjoy user created content! Pff, i was worrying already.

9/ Console or PC?

Mr.Pedantic: PC. Definitely. You can do so much more with a PC, not just in terms of gaming, but everything else as well, and with a mouse you get much finer control over the game, whereas in consoles it generally feels kind of clumsy. The only good console I've played is the Wii, and it's good of Nintendo to make games that play to its strengths, because the end product is something that in my opinion tops out the Xbox360 and PS3 easily.

Noobst3R: PC, but some things will never come to PC, they just wont work on PC.

10/ What game(s) are you most looking forward to, and why?

Mr.Pedantic: Starcraft 2 is a game I would really like to see. A lot of my friends are Koreans, so they're crazy about Starcraft. And I just want to see what they think of SC2. Otherwise, no games, really. I generally buy games when they're cheaper, after they've been out for a few months, so I don't really get excited about new games, since I know I won't buy them for another few months.

Noobst3R: Mhm.. A Halo game that continues the story of Master chief, not some monkey in new mombasa that lost his teammates and now has to fight through the city without an armor that practically carried the gameplay of the whole Halo series.

11/ What’s your biggest gaming pet peeve?

Mr.Pedantic: In regards to people, I would have to say spoilt children. People whose balls haven't dropped yet but are trying to act all cool and righteous and insulting you left, right, and center because you beat them at something and they can't take it because they're supposed to have leet skills and if anyone beats them they must have cheated.

Game-wise, I really hate bad storylines. And games where the devs have tried to make it different for the sake of being different. If something ain't broke, don't try to fix it. Because more often than not, it's going to end up worse.

Noobst3R: My biggest annoyance would be the Spy in TF2. You are getting healed by 2 medics, and your having a killing spree. Tingeling! You're dead.

12/ Pretending that Hollywood is not going to butcher it to death, what game do you most want to see a film made out of?

Mr.Pedantic: The original Far Cry. It would be absolutely awesome.

Noobst3R: Another Hitman film, but more in the line of the games. If i can't choose a sequel, let's say Assasin's Creed. An assassin in the old Jeruzalem. It's got everything, stealth, climbing action, womans begging,..

13/ If you could design your own game, what would it be?

Mr.Pedantic: It would be an RTS, kind of like World in Conflict or Dawn of War.

Noobst3R: Some MMO in the land of Azeroth... No srsly? A flash game with beer.

14/Any last words? (Before we tell Inland Revenue about your tax evasion)

Mr.Pedantic: How did I do?

Noobst3R:
Keep going SI!!!!!
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
There you have it folks, the 4-1-1 on those who you voted went above and beyond the call of duty, modern warfare (2) style. Do they still have your love and respect? I guess we'll find out.

Until next time.

This presentation thing is very nice, leaving out the member of the month thing, it might be quite fun to have a thread where people ask personal-ish question(s) to the people below and answer the question(s) above... (might make one after shower).
